Serbia’s Liquid Tree: The Futuristic Urban Solution That Cleans Air 10–50 Times Faster Than Real Trees

 


In the heart of Belgrade, Serbia, stands a groundbreaking innovation called the Liquid Tree— or LIQUID 3. This invention isn’t a real tree but a futuristic bio-technology system that cleans the air 10–50 times faster than natural trees.


Developed by scientists from the University of Belgrade’s Institute for Multidisciplinary Research, this project represents a new solution for urban air pollution, especially in cities where planting real trees is limited due to space constraints.


The Liquid Tree is essentially a bioreactor filled with water and microalgae — microscopic plants that absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen through photosynthesis. These algae can absorb 50 times more CO₂ than an average tree in the same time period.


This means that even a small installation of Liquid 3 can make a huge environmental impact in crowded urban areas, helping to fight air pollution and improve oxygen levels.


The structure looks like a large transparent tank, often placed in public squares or along busy roads. It also doubles as urban furniture, featuring benches, solar-powered lighting, and even charging stations for electronic devices — all powered by renewable energy.


Scientists explain that the microalgae inside the bioreactor act like a “green lung” for the city. They remove harmful gases, dust, and carbon dioxide while producing oxygen, creating a cleaner and healthier atmosphere for residents.


Unlike real trees that need years to grow, this system can start filtering air immediately. It requires minimal maintenance, consumes very little electricity, and operates year-round.


One of the key goals behind this innovation is to provide a sustainable, scalable, and aesthetic solution for cities facing rapid urbanization. Traditional tree planting is sometimes impossible due to limited soil, pollution, or space. Liquid 3 bridges that gap by bringing nature-inspired technology into concrete jungles.


In Serbia, the Liquid Tree project has already gained international attention, inspiring other countries to adopt similar models for their smart city initiatives. Researchers hope that by expanding this project, cities can become self-cleaning ecosystems, where technology and nature coexist harmoniously.
